Cork City 1988/89: Guinness, Turner's Cross, and a First Season in the Top Flight

Cork City had just won promotion to the League of Ireland Premier Division when this jersey was made. The Guinness logo across the chest. A debut season against Shamrock Rovers, Bohemians, and Shelbourne. This shirt is from the year it all started.

Promotion and a First Season at the Top

Cork City had won promotion to the League of Ireland Premier Division in 1988, and this jersey was worn in their first full season at that level. For a club built on support from the Leeside community, it was a significant moment.

The Premier Division brought matches against the established sides — Shamrock Rovers, Bohemians, Shelbourne. Cork City held their own.

The Kit

The home jersey was white with green and black detailing — Cork City's traditional colours. Guinness sat across the chest as shirt sponsor, as they did for many League of Ireland clubs during this period.

It is an honest, workmanlike kit. No dramatic redesign, no gimmicks. Just the crest, the sponsor, and the colours.

The Players

Dave Barry was one of the key figures in Cork City during this era — a midfielder who also represented the Republic of Ireland at senior level. A proper Cork man, well capable at this level.

The side was built around players who knew the city, knew the club, and had earned their place in the Premier Division.
